Dinosaur play! 3 EASY dinosaur small world ideas

Dinosaurs are a big favourite for many children. Imaginations are triggered by these creatures that once existed. And that’s just it! Nobody has actually seen a dinosaur or observed dinosaurs so a lot of the facts are open to interpretation. Perhaps that is part of the fascination of playing dinosaurs.

When budding palaeontologists repeatedly play with dinosaurs or repeatedly share facts or ask questions relentlessly about dinosaurs, then it’s time to do some serious Dinoland making!  We are excited about our video that shows some setups designed to inspire dinosaur play. We have kept everything very simple with the setting up of small worlds for both indoors and outdoors. If you watch our video, you will see how we used bits and pieces including a range of materials to create Dinoland indoors. Nothing was purchased for this. The outdoors setup included sand, leaves, rocks and sticks which is great for a more sensory Dinoland. If you are brave enough, this setup can be brought indoors for play too! Our third Dinoland small world was created in a box with printed images that could be moved around by the children.

All our dinosaur small worlds were designed with the intention that children have the freedom to adapt the settings as storylines unfold. Creativity can then flow and the dinosaur adventure will be unique and special to the storyteller or storytellers as they play.

We are also excited about our printable bundle which will help to support children’s interests in dinosaurs. The bundle includes the images that were used for setting up the dinosaur small world in a box featured in our video. These images are not limited to the small world. They could be used for matching games or displays or for making a dinosaur book. The printable bundle also includes picture outlines, mazes, word cards, dinosaur scenes, games and more. We have included some ideas of how this resource could be used but these are only suggestions. Use this resource in whatever way best supports the interest in dinosaurs. For example, the dinosaur images for the small world can also be made into puppets using popsicle sticks. Another example is the dinosaur outlines which would also be great for playdough mats or for cardboard stencils.
